Once, during the summer, Geza heard one of the FWI short-term volunteers talk about her physical attraction for the male chimps. She wondered aloud: “Which one of them would make the best lover?” That sort of talk went way beyond what he found comfortable. It alarmed and disturbed him. He also listened to Carole speak about how she “loved” this or that chimp, in her emotional way, and he considered that to be one more indicator of Carole’s flakiness, her undisciplined, uncritical subjectivity. Carole had demonstrated herself to be a good follower of chimps, but she wasn’t a scientist. She didn’t understand science, and she didn’t understand objectivity as a professional stance.
After Carole left in September, however, he began to imagine he could understand what she meant. To begin with, he started to recognize that he had favorites, real favorites, among the chimps. Leakey, for example. And in Leakey’s case at least, it seemed that he returned the sentiment. Geza gradually started thinking of Leakey as a friend, which was the only word he could ever think of to describe the relationship in plain English. To make the English less plain: There was a positive emotional association between Leakey and him that extended in both directions. Leakey seemed to like Geza’s company. He liked Leakey’s company. Obviously, the relationship was mute. They never talked to each other, since chimpanzees don’t talk, but that muteness began to seem like a minor obstacle to understanding.
